So my wife and I had been looking forward to having a date night to see Anchorman 2. The previews were pretty funny, though based on some of the recent movies from Farrell, I knew I needed to temper my expectations a bit. When I checked Rotten Tomatoes last week, I saw that both critics and the general public had rated the movie at 75%. Not bad, I thought...still worth seeing.
We finally made it to the theater last night, and I have to say the first 2/3 of the movie was fine..maybe a B-. Some of the jokes were stupid and not funny (according to me, and the fact that the full theater stayed quite fairly often). However, there were some truly funny moments: the bus crash, the family dinner, and meeting the lady boss for the first time. These were enough to make the movie worth it. Until the ice skating accident, when the movie took a turn for the horrible. And boy do I mean horrible!
As I was watching the last 30 or so minutes unfold, I wondered if I was still in the right theater. The movie took such a terrible right turn, its really hard to understand how it made it to theaters. I know "different strokes for different folks" and all that, but boy, I just don't see how ANYONE could find the last 30 minutes entertaining. Sure, there were a couple of 10 second moments, but other than that. Total crap. It was weird how it felt like a totally different movie. As if the first 2/3 and the last 1/3 were written by totally different people. Not only was it not funny. It simply made no sense, and didn't fit what happened before.
The ending was so bad that it took the B- down to an F for me. It is, quite possibly, the worst (and most jarringly different, when compared to the first part of the movie) ending I've ever seen. Horrible!
Note that on Rotten Tomatoes, the public rating has fallen to just 66%. I would imagine that number will continue to drop.
